9 Inch Grinding Disc (230mm): Maximum Removal for Heavy Industry

The 9 inch grinding disc (230 × 6.0 × 22.2 mm) is the largest depressed-center grinding wheel for handheld grinders. On a 2,600 W-class 230 mm grinder it delivers the maximum legal handheld grinding power — for shipbuilding, heavy structural welds, foundry work and demolition-scale surface removal.

Heavy-Industry Applications

  • Grinding multi-pass structural welds on heavy sections
  • Foundry and casting cleanup: removing gates, risers and flash
  • Ship hull and offshore platform weld dressing
  • Rapid removal of thick rust, scale and old heavy coatings

Why 9 Inch for Heavy Work

  1. Maximum contact area: the widest handheld grinding pass available.
  2. Longest disc life: the most abrasive volume of any handheld disc — critical on continuous industrial grinding.
  3. Flat results on big plates: large disc bridges surface irregularities without digging in.
  4. Industrial grade: double fiberglass reinforcement built for sustained high-load operation.

Safety — Read Before Use

  • A 230 mm grinder is a high-energy tool: always use both hands, the side handle and the guard.
  • Verify the grinder's rated speed matches the disc (≤6,640 RPM) — never mount a 9" disc on a faster smaller machine.
  • Inspect every disc for cracks and check the expiry date; a failed 9" disc is lethal.
  • Take breaks — vibration exposure on large grinders accumulates fast.

FAQ

9 inch vs 7 inch grinding disc — when to upgrade?

Upgrade when daily work is large-area grinding or heavy weld removal and operator fatigue from many small-disc passes is the bottleneck. Stay at 7" if you also need maneuverability.

How long does a 9 inch grinding disc last?

Longest of all handheld sizes — commonly a full shift of active grinding on structural steel before replacement.

Can it grind aluminum or stainless?

Stainless: only with INOX-rated 230 mm discs. Aluminum: not recommended — standard wheels load instantly; use dedicated aluminum grinding products.
