The Stainless Steel Challenge
Stainless steel is valued for its corrosion resistance — but improper grinding destroys this property. Two problems occur: discoloration (heat tinting that creates ugly rainbow colors) and contamination (embedding carbon steel particles that cause rust).
What Causes Discoloration
Heat tinting occurs when stainless steel surface temperature exceeds:
- 200°C: Light straw color
- 300°C: Brown/blue tinting
- 400°C+: Dark blue/black scaling
These oxide layers compromise the passive chromium layer that gives stainless its corrosion resistance.
What Causes Contamination
Using the wrong flap disc embeds iron particles into the stainless surface. These particles:
- Rust when exposed to moisture
- Create galvanic corrosion sites
- Spread rust to the surrounding stainless surface
Flap Disc Selection for Stainless Steel
| Specification | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Grain type | Ceramic (preferred) or Zirconia | Cooler cutting, less heat |
| Grit sequence | 60 → 80 → 120 | Progressive refinement |
| Shape | T27 (flat) | Controlled, flat contact |
| Backing | Fiberglass | No metal contamination |
| Label | "For stainless" or "inox" | Iron-free formulation |
Grinding Technique for No Discoloration
- Use light pressure: Let the disc do the work — heavy pressure = more heat
- Keep the disc moving: Don't dwell in one spot — continuous motion distributes heat
- Use lower RPM: Reduce grinder speed by 20-30% from maximum
- Choose ceramic grain: Cuts cooler than zirconia
- Use a dedicated stainless disc: Never use a disc previously used on carbon steel
- Work in short bursts: Grind for 5-10 seconds, pause, then resume
Post-Grind Treatment
After grinding, restore the passive layer:
- Clean with stainless steel cleaner to remove any contamination
- Pickle and passivate using citric or nitric acid treatment (for critical applications)
- Electropolish for maximum corrosion resistance (food/medical grade)
Conclusion: Discipline Prevents Problems
Stainless steel grinding success is all about heat control and contamination prevention. Use dedicated stainless flap discs, grind with light pressure at moderate speed, and always clean the surface afterward.
