Crimped Wire Wheel Brush - Flat
Product Description
While wire brushes are essential tools for metal preparation, improper use can result in serious injury from flying wire fragments. Understanding and implementing proper safety protocols ensures efficient operation while protecting operators from harm.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wire brushes operate at speeds up to 15,000 RPM, ejecting broken wires at velocities sufficient to penetrate skin and eye tissue. Minimum PPE requirements include:
-
Face Shield: Impact-rated face shield worn over safety glasses (not glasses alone)
-
Heavy Gloves: Leather or cut-resistant gloves to protect against wire punctures
-
Long Sleeves: Thick canvas or leather jacket to prevent wire embedding in arms
-
Hearing Protection: Wire brushes generate 85+ decibels
-
Respiratory Protection: Dust mask or respirator when removing paint or rust
Machine Setup: Always use the angle grinder guard—never remove it when using wire brushes. The guard deflects broken wires and contains the brush if it shatters. Ensure the brush is properly mounted with the correct flange and nut, and verify the arbor matches the brush bore exactly (no adapters).
Operational Safety:
-
Inspect Before Use: Check for loose wires, damaged arbor holes, or rusted brushes
-
Speed Limits: Never exceed the brush's maximum RPM rating
-
Angle of Attack: Maintain 10-15 degrees between brush and workpiece—90-degree contact increases wire breakage risk
-
Pressure: Let the brush do the work; excessive force causes premature wire fatigue
-
Direction: Move with the brush rotation, not against it, to prevent kickback
Wire Breakage Warning Signs: If wires are breaking frequently, check for:
-
Excessive pressure or angle
-
RPM too high for brush diameter
-
Worn brush (replace when wire length is 50% of original)
-
Improper wire type for material
