Black Aluminum Oxide Flap Disc
Product Description
Black Silicon Carbide Flap Discs - Hard & Brittle Material Specialist
Extreme Hardness for Non-Ferrous and Brittle Materials
Our Black Silicon Carbide (SiC) flap discs utilize the second-hardest synthetic abrasive (Mohs hardness 9.5, just below diamond). With extreme sharpness but controlled brittleness, these discs excel on materials that laugh at aluminum oxide—concrete, stone, glass, and hard cast iron. The "black fired" ceramic-grade SiC offers superior edge retention on brittle workpieces.
Key Features
- Black Silicon Carbide (98%+ SiC purity) for maximum hardness
- Extremely sharp crystalline structure cuts glass and stone without pressure
- Brittle fracture mechanism prevents loading on soft metals
- Ideal for grinding cast iron where Al₂O₃ loads and burns
- Conducts heat away from workpiece better than other abrasives

Material-Specific Performance
Cast Iron: The classic choice. SiC's brittleness matches cast iron's brittleness, preventing the "gumming" that occurs with aluminum oxide.
Stone/Concrete: Excellent for smoothing concrete edges, shaping stone countertops, removing form marks.
Glass: For artistic edge work and smoothing cut glass edges (use water mist).
Hard Non-Ferrous: Tungsten carbide, ceramics, composites.
Critical Usage Warnings
DO NOT USE on soft steel or stainless steel. Black SiC will wear away 3-4x faster than Al₂O₃ on steel, wasting money. The sharp grains also embed in soft metals, causing rust points later. This is a specialty abrasive for hard/brittle materials only.
Unique Thermal Properties
Silicon carbide has higher thermal conductivity than other abrasives, meaning it draws heat away from the workpiece into the dust. This makes it safer for heat-sensitive glass and prevents thermal cracks in stone. However, the disc itself runs cooler, extending the resin bond life.
Detailed Applications
Automotive: Brake rotor finishing (cast iron). Construction: Concrete form cleaning, rebar grinding. Marine: Propeller deburring (bronze/brass). Art: Glass sculpting, ceramic finishing. Manufacturing: Titanium casting cleanup (intermittent contact).
